News and mail as text files?

I'm still having a terrible time trying to read my news and mail.  It STILL
garbles every other line.

Is there a way to download news and mail as text files (via x-modem), so
that I can read them off-line?  Do I need a mail reader to do it, or can I
just use a text file reader?
