Frank,
You need an interface card (Super Serial Card or equivalent) and a
SSC ---> Modem cable and a communications program.

The SSC (and cable for that matter) are available from Quality
Computers (800) 777-3642, if you don't already have a clock in your system,
you might want to consider buying a Serial Pro (SSC card clone + clock).

SSC's are frequently found for sale on comp-sys-apple2-marketplace in
the $20 - $30 price range. Cables can be purchased from your local
electronics dealers frequently cheaper than through mail order (ask for a
double male DB-25 cable with all pins connected straight through, $7 at a
local shop here).

Commercial comm packages for the IIe, Intrec software (602) 992-5515
markets a product called Proterm 3.1 for around $70 (I think, I bought the
upgrade from 3.0, so I'm not sure) but your machine must be enhanced w/ 128k
for it to run. Speaking of enhancement kits, Quality also markets them for
$60 (piece of cake to install, 4 chips, pictures and instructions provided),
extended 80 column cards (increases your system memory to 128k) are available
from them for $20. Sorry, don't mean to sound like an ad.

There are shareware/freeware communications packages around, my
favorite to give to novices (no insult intended, we all started out fresh at
one time) is comm.system 2.5 by Jim Ferr.

I distribute a disk containing all the stuff a new Apple II modem
user needs to get started, if you're interested let me know... Costs a dollar
(barely covers my shipping).

Good luck, and welcome to the Apple II!

                                Chuck
