Two computers on single SCSI chain

Has anyone tried using two computers on a single SCSI chain?
In particular, I'm wondering if given a SCSI controller in both
my IIgs and IBM 286, whether they would be able to share a SCSI
tape backup (or other peripherals) without having to dis- and
re-connect the tape unit each time.  --  I'm trying to figure out
which peripherals to buy for a minimum of cost.

If you have not tried it but are fairly sure of the outcome, I would
also like to hear from you.  Thanks.
