Downloading files from FTP sites

I am relatively new to using this Conference System on this BBS.  I have
noticed that many people have posted articles in which they have placed
files for downloading at different FTP sites, like brownvm.brown.edu and
cco.caltech.edu.  The problem is that I don't know how to hook up to these
sites in order to download them.  Do I have to call another Apple BBS in a
different state or can I get to the different sites by using the BBS I am
on now?  Thanks for the help!
