There used to be a Shareware program called SCSI.HACKER which would
probably let you access the drive, but I think it went commercial (or
got bundled into another product).
Resource Central wrote a small program called SMARTPORT which can at
least check if the drive is recognised by the card, but I don't think
it can do a full test of the drive.
You should try to get hold of the software that came with the SCSI
card. I have the newer version of Apple's card (High Speed SCSI
Card), which has newer versions of the utility programs, most of which
don't work with the original SCSI card.

Never heard of it, so I can't say whether it might have compatibilty
problems.

That makes perfect sense, if by "init" you mean "device driver".
GS/OS recognises the Apple SCSI card while booting, and if you haven't
installed the SCSI drivers onto your system disk, then it brings up a
warning saying you should install them.
This step is necessary before GS/OS will even be able to tell if the
drive exists. Since the drive wasn't recognised, the GS/OS drivers
are obviously having trouble communicating with the drive.
