  try this init too:    at x4 &D0 &K3 &M0 &Q5 N1 L0 S95=44
     or the short version when dialing: at&Q5N1 DT###-####
  also, a "setup" to adapt to yo our phone line:
        go into terminal mode (online) and ATNS37=9\E1
                  modem responds OK then  ATDP###-####
        dialing a known high-speed board, finially, just hang up
        and type ATZ to save it... 
with the wrong cable, when connecting over 9600, the modem
tries to handshake over the cts/rts line and waits there <nothing
on the screen> till it does.  The modified cable crams all three
<from rs232> handshakers into the apple's one. (pin 4 I think)
In the control panel, you turn off all handshaking, well maybe rts on.
and buffering on. <I think proterm tries to  do this for you ^^^>
