PLEASE help w/ProTERM 3.1

OK, I'm running ProTERM v3.1 on a //c+ with a Zoom v.32bis VFX FaxModem.
 
Problem: when I set PT3.1 at 9600 to connect with a 14.4K system, every-
thing is fine -- except that I'm not at my highest possible bps.
 
When I set PT3.1 at 19200 (only higher option), it usually doesn't detect a
carrier.  When it does, I loose LOTS of characters randomly.
 
I've tried changing the Character Pace lower (85% to 75%); I've tried
raising the Line Pace (20/100 to 40/100); and I've tried changing the send
mode from LINE to CHAR.  Nothing helps the random character loss or carrier
detect reliability.
 
Question: WHAT do I have to do to connect at 14.4K with EC and DC?
