Apple being 'kind' has nothing to do with this. Apple 3.5" drives
since the original AppleDisk 3.5 have been 'dumb' drives, with no
controller in the drive itself. The controller is either on the computer
or an interface card, the latter of which is available as the "Apple II
FDHD Interface Card" (or similar name, I forget exactly).
In short, there is no way to turn an AppleDisk 3.5 into a FDHD; I
believe they even use different mechanisms as well as controllers.
