Apple II/Appleworks conversion

Hello everyone,
    I am on the look-out for any tools, utilities, source files, moral
support, etc... that would accomodate a file migration from an Appleworks
database application running on Apple II to MS-DOS format for eventual
upload into a Vmark UniVerse application running on an RS/6000.  I
realize that I can list the files to an ASCII file on the Apple format
diskettes, but I am not sure how I will be able to read them on another
machine.  Is a direct link possible, maybe from the serial (modem) port
on the Apple to a serial line on the target machine.  Any thoughts?
