Well, it's hard to not just give this away because it's such a basic element..

Anyway, all I can say is that you can't just walk straight in the door (gate)
to Mangar's Tower.  I had thought that that's what the key would do too, but
it isn't..  You have to find another way in.  And you almost certainly have
already found it.
