Telnet access...

I've got a telnet number which I use to access america online with from my
area.  I was reading the FAQ post and noticed that you can supposedly FTP
through a telnet service or xarchie (or something), and was wondering how
you do this?  Since my america online software always handles access I
don't see what it's saying to the telnet server.  I get a prompt for
TERMINAL:  than a @: prompt and I have no idea what to do from here. 
Anyone have experience with telnet?  Thanks...
