Sound Problem

My GS occasionally gets very LOUD! The control panel has no effect on the
speaker volume. Probing around with a meter I find that (what I assume to be)
the volume control voltage on the LM3340 is under my control but it has no
effect at all on the audio. This happens only after fairly long periods of
good behaviour. Any suggestions before I take a gas-axe to the mother-board?
Is there a history of intermittants in this area?
