Its the same situation here in Oz.
The only way around it is to open a bank account in US$.
You can then deposit your cheques (checks) for free (with some banks).
The only catch is you generally have to have a relatively large minimum
deposit (A$1000 ~= US$700).
Can't this be done in Europe?
