I don't know of a way of using MenuSelect for this, but you could write
a routine which draws a simulated menu. It would just need to save the
background, draw a rectangle using the height and width provided in the
appropriate menu record, draw the menu item names, dividers, etc., invert
the selected menu option, and restore the background.
Phillip Vandry's HKMenus can open menus while the mouse is not being clicked,
so he probably has a method which might solve your problem, too.
