Strange garbling problem on GS

My father has been having a strange intermittent  problem on his GS.  Every
month or so, he boots up to find his files are messed up, with garbled 
filenames, on one partition of his hard drive.  Programs can be run, but 
often crash unexpectedly.  His only recourse has been to reinitialize the 
partition, and rebuild it.  This problem does not seem to be specific to 
any single program he is running.  He is using the latest system, and has
few inits.  Has anyone seen this sort of thing before, or can make a 
suggestion for what to try?
