UMDSS might do the trick for you. But it will be a pain in the 'arse' to setup
and get working properly. You'll have to get ProLine and setup the BBS etc.

Unless someone has an offline, remote mail reading program for Modemworks?
To bad I didn't have more time. I'd give you METAL UUCICO and whip up a METAL
version of Elm for ya! ;) Then you could use MSH and the entire thing would
take up less than 200K in source code. You could just stick in the disk, run
MSH, run UUCICO and proceed to read mail and answer news with an Elm and Rn
style interface for a Unixlike shell.
And your friends could call in and use it as well, plus leave you mail etc..
It's really very simple actually. Just need that UUCP-g protocol and were set.
