Help on Ultima V Please!

I am very frustrated...I need to find out how to get past the first room
in the Dungeon Shame...The room has only an up ladder in it and I can't seem
to do anything...I have already killed all three Shadowlords but my charcater
is not Eighth level does that have anything to do with it?  Someone has told
me that you have to search along the walls of the room, but that does'nt seem
to work...If you know what to do from here...Please Email me at:

I have already sent my one set of disks back to Origin just in case the game
was screwed up...
