Because SP 0.5 is a shell utility (forget The Manager or SwitchIt)
and ORCA can't place processes in the background. That leaves GNO. :)
Perhaps a future version will remove the restriction, but for now, you
need GNO for background playing.

In fact, I can "kill" the process table entry and quit GNO; the MOD
will continue playing. The system seems rather unstable at this point
though, and the GS usually crashes when I launch another program.

Ummm... try /mirrors/amiga.physik.unizh.ch/mods at wuarchive. There
are almost 600 MOD's in there. I've seen a few posted as uuencode files
to alt.binaries.sounds.misc from time to time.
