Is your definition of a "true GS" limited to a small gray box that
says "Apple IIGS" on the front?
Mine still says "Apple IIe" on top...but it has a ROM 01 IIGS
motherboard inside--complete with the DOC, the VGC, and the other
goodies--and it says "Apple IIGS" (actually, it says "Apple IIgs," but
that's picking nits) when it fires up.
Besides, if it didn't have a DOC in it, I wouldn't be playing mods
with soniqTracker on it. :-)
