that sounds a lot like a problem ive been having,
if i turn the monitor off, and it cools down, then
once is powered up again, for about 5-10 minutes, the
screen will jump, and occasionally the screen height
will be reduced to about 1/2 normal, very dim, and the 
power on led on the fromt will dim as well, so ive
been figuring that the power supply is probably dying,
(and yes, a smack to the side will fix it for a few minutes)
i have very rarely turned my system off for the last two years
for that very reason, i dont want to buy another monitor...
sometimes too, it i tap on the knobs on back, it will 
be ok, so it could be a bad knob, (although the led dimming is strange)
