v42bis modem, IIGS, and Proterm?

I recently bought an ATI 9600 etc/e modem, that has v.42bis
compression.  However, I cannot get it to operate at speeds above 9600
because it insists on "Hardware Flow Control" being enabled.  Does the
GS support this?   I only have Proterm 2.1-- should I upgrade it
(Yeah, yeah, I know I should but will it solve the problem with the
faster modems?-- ProTerm 2.1 doesn't know anything about 9600 baud
modems-- I have to use Null Modem Driver to operate it).

Also, how do I tell the serial port that I might want to operate at
38.4K baud?  Can the GS go this fast?  What about 19.2K?

I'm sure other people have done this successfully... I'd appreciate
any suggestions people might have...
