Thanks for the intelligent comments, Dave. I didn't mean to give the
impression that "assembly rules!" and we should abandon HLLs, though.
My original intention was more in tune with your thoughts, that the
act of programming now appears easier because of superficial advances.
It is much easier to hack together a "sorta working" program using a
fancy connect-the-dots windowing system or nifty HLL environment than
it is to do so using assembly language. But the careful thought and
planning necessary to create a quick, easy to use application haven't
changed at all. Think of the novice sportsman who buys thousands of
dollars worth of professional equipment in an effort to increase his
abilities, or the starting out musician who purchases a $5,000 guitar.
