Printer Port Control Panel Settings

When do the control panel settings for the GS's printer port apply?

I have each of the settings set to their default value, including
"Add LF after CR: Yes".  If I write a BASIC, program, then, that sends
ten carriage returns to the printer, the paper is advanced ten lines.
However, if I open a GS/OS "file" representing the printer and write
ten carriage returns to it, nothing happens unless I explicitly follow each
of them with line feeds.  Is the "Add LF after CR" setting ignored when the
