Re: AppleWorks to AppleWorks GS info

In AppleWorks GS, I would just open the original Appleworks file in DB and
WP formats, and AWGS would convert them automatically. I'm sure it can do
this with spreadsheets as well....
Aha! In the "Using AppleWorks GS" book by Douglas L. Brown, in Appendix A,
it says that classic Appleworks files can be opened by the analogous AWGS
applicaton. Basically, in AWGS, at the "opening menu,"
(1) click on the name of the file to select the file
(2) click on the open button on the dialog box (or just simply
doubleclick on the file in step (1). But there's more:
"When you open a classic AppleWorks spreadsheet file, the contents
of the SS are displayed in a new AWGS SS window. The following list is
the formatting retained in the document:
Cell formatting
Default cell format
Column width
Titles
THe most important changes are seen in classic AppleWorks formulas. A
crucial change applies to relative and absolute references in formulas. In
classic AppleWorks SS, no information is stored with the formula to
indicate if references are relative or absolute. All references are stored
as relative references." As a result, when classic AW formulas are
transferred to the new doc, all references must be displayed as relative
references. This won't have impact on the values displayed on the original
SS, but may have serious consequences if you copy or move formulas from
their original location in the SS. Carefully check all formulas in the SS
before copying or moving formulas!
There is more in Appendix B, but restating all that info could take
some time. Mail me for more help, if needed.
