More on the Faster Super Serial Card
There has been a very good response to my inquery about who might be
interested in purchasing an add-on card for the Apple Super Serial Card to
make it capable of baud rates up to and including 153,600!
However, there have also been many questions about it which I hope to
answer here.
1) This is a Super Serial Card add-on only. It will probably work on most
SSC compatable cards.
2) This does not have anything to do with the //gs built-in serial port.
Maybe after this project is complete, I'll look into the //gs serial
hardware to see what can be done.
3) In order to achive the higher speeds, the serial drivers need a small
change in order to properly select the faster speed. I've been able to
locate and change the drivers for ProTERM v3.0 and Paul Parkhurst's
drivers for ACOS.
4) I've successfully tested the modification at 38,400 to my USR Robotics
modem, and at 57,600 to a friends Practical Peripherals. I've was able to
get a cps rate of 4850 on a Zmodem download with a v.32bis/v.42bis
connection. I am running the mod on my Apple //e with a Super Serial
compatable card and a Zip Chip 8000 (8MHz). If your computer doesn't
have a faster microprocessor (Zip/Transwarp), you won't be able to use
the faster speed without losing characters.
5) The Super Serial Card has a flow control problem where as when CTS goes
low to tell the computer to stop sending data, 1 character gets trashed,
thus messing up your transmission. My add-on board will not have this
problem.
Right now, I don't plan on anything else besides this little add-on card.
I'm not going to design a stand-alone card for the Apple //, you must have
a Super Serial card for this add-on to work.
If you are interested or have questions/comments, feel free to drop me a
line at the following address.
Thanks,
