Spinning 3.5" drive
I've been having problems with my Apple 3.5" drives when running GS/OS. When
using 16 bit programs to try and read a disk in the drive, the disk light
comes on and never goes off. If I run a ProDOS 8 program and use it read the
disk, there's sometimes no problem, but other times have the same problem.
I.e. It's intermittent. I'm running a ROM 3 GS, so I thought, well, maybe
if I installed System 6, the problem will go away. (I was running 5.0.4). SO
I installed System 6 on my hard disk and then booted from it. For a while I
didn't have any problems but then the problem started happening again. In the
current issue of The Apple II Guide published by Apple computer they talk
about a spinning problem that may occur when Apple 3.5 drives and UniDisk 5.25
drives are daisy-chained. I don't have that configuration but the symptoms
are the same.
The spinning problem also occurs when I switch from a 16 bit program to a
ProDOS 8 program and ProDOS 8 is invoked. I get the ProDOS 2.0.1 screen and
then it polls the 3.5" drive but then hangs there and the drive continues to
spin until I press reset.
The Apple Guide describes the problems:
The spinning problem is intermittent and only occurs on Apple 3.5" drives with
revision A Daisy Chain interface boards and the following configuration:
An Apple IIGS with one or more Apple 3.5 drives attached and one or more
Unidisk 5.25 drives daisy chained to one of the Apple 3.5" drives.
An Apple IIGS with one or more Apple 3.5 drives attached and a DuoDisk daisy
chained to one of the 3.5 inch drives.
Has anyone heard about this problem occuring without the UniDisk attached,
which is the situation with me. The 16 bit programs I was using to try and
read the drive were Prosel Utilities, Advanced Disk Utility and the System 6
Finder. I used Copy II+ and Proline to successfully read the disks without
any problems sometimes but at other times get the same result.
What I'm wondering is if I get the ROM upgrade to the drives, will the problem
go away? I haven't seen this problem discussed here so I was wondering if
anyone else has experienced this.
Any suggestions as to how to further investigate the problem would be
appreciated.
