Your keyboard is probably producing them, but the input routine still converts
them to upper case because AppleSoft and DOS don't know how to deal with them.
Most word processors will handle lower case correctly, but to display lower
case you really need a new character generator or an 80 column card.

This is the character generator. It's right next to where the keyboard plugs
into the motherboard and should say "ROM SPECL" or something like that on the
motherboard next to it. Replacements for this chip used to be available from
many sources, but the ads probably don't list it any more. I know AE had one
for a really outrageous price, so I'd suggest calling Alltech or Pre-Owned to
see if they carry lower case chips for the ][+.
