Irrelevant. tar shouldn't be trying in the first place. I've been grabbing
.tar.Z files for a while and they've always come out owned by me.

He tried them. They didn't work. (see the original message)
Brian: try tar -\? and see if it has unlisted options... maybe the man page
is wrong.
