MESSAGE HAS REPLIES.

From Kirtan Singh Kalsa's editorial column in the December issue of
The Computer Paper:

"When Dave Small [of a firm making micro-computer equipment] asked his
wife: "Why are there so few women into computers?", she said: "The real
question is: why are men so into computers? I mean, I use a toaster, but
I don't go to a Toaster user group."

On December 7, 1842, at a meeting of the Homebrew Electrical Gadgets
Club, a member brought a strange contraption made of coils of wire
mounted inside a metal box. Watch this, he said, inserting a slice of
bread. Immediately there was a fragrant aroma, and the first toast was
created. The other members were pleasantly astonished, and soon set
about making toasters of their own. Specialized versions began to
appear, for muffins, scones, crumpets, croissants, pitas and so on.
However, this creative diversity was soon squelched by the giant
International Bakery Machines company, which had the economic clout to
enforce a standardization of both bread and toasters. Early on there
were compatibility problems, but by the time the clone makers entered
the market, IBM was into the big dough. As for the women, they were
just as glad that their husbands were down in their workshops making
toast in strange contraptions rather than getting into worse mischief.
