I had a similar problem with my hard disk, too. (Not a Vulcan, but a 
normal external SCSI disk) It turned out that the problem was caused by
the cable connecting the hard disk to the GS. I was using a flat cable
that was too long and changing to a normal SCSI cable fixed the problem. 

Though I can't imagine AE selling Vulcans with faulty cables, take a 
look at the cable. Maybe it has come loose. This is the only hint
I can give.
