Hawk - suggest your friend try SuperConvert from Seven Hills, or 
DreamGrafix from Dream World Software.  Superconvert is primarily
a conversion program (VERY GOOD), while DreamGrafix is primarily
an art program that can read GIF files and save them in Apple format.
