Well, having just recently helped some friends figure out the same on their
Mac, .hqx represents BINHEX format, which appears to be a file shell similar
to MacBinary. It is equivalent to Binary II in the apple II world being used
on Shrinkit files for the BXY format. You'll notice that most of the .hqx
files (at least the ones I've seen) have names like xxx.sit.hqx, so they're
still packed by an archive utility like Stuffit or Compactor. Binhex may
actually be an ASCII utility like Binscii for all I know. I've never
attempted looking at a file that I FTPed without Binhex mode on.
