I have it back together now and basically operational. The Connerdrive is mounted and spins up fine. The 7805 regulator is wired in and I'm reading all four voltages within reasonable tolerances. Too late to drag a IIGS out of the garage, but I'll probably fire up the system within the next day or so.
And, the grande finale! It all works.I did learn one interesting thing: If you are replacing or updating a Vulcan with a new drive that's never been partitioned, do NOT try to initialize it from the GS/OS utility diskette! In a classic case of "..can't there from here", GS/OS detects the presence of a block device during boot but crashes hard at the desktop when trying to mount it as a volume. You cannot get far enough to run the manager utility and intialize the drive!
After figuring out what was causing the problem, I booted a diskette made from the 140k 5.25" P8 image that's floating around. This makes it all the way up, but the version of PARTITION.MANAGER is too old to recognize the 2.0 "Gold" firmware.
What finally did the trick was copying the v2.05 manager from the 3.5" image onto the P8 diskette and retrying with that disk. Bingo! It recognized the Conner CP3104 without any problems and let me create and format 3x32M + 1x4M volumes. From that point on, things "just worked"(tm).
Another working addition to my vast collection of Apple "computer junk" (as my better half terms it) :-).
