The Apple MIDI interface will only work on the IIgs and Macintosh.
MIDI uses a non-standard clock frequency, which the Apple MIDI
interface generates and feeds into the clock input of the IIgs/Mac
serial chip (via the Handshake In pin). The IIc has no way of
receiving an external clock signal.
I think the MIDI data rate is 32000 bits per second (something around
there). One possible option would be to design an external buffering
device that communicated with the IIc at 19200 baud, and MIDI at 32000
baud, but it wouldn't work too well if a lot of data was being
received, and it would be nearly impossible to derive accurate timing
information.
Another option would be to modify the IIc by replacing the crystal. I
don't know if the 6551 can support such a fast crystal, or if this
would interfere with the normal operation of the IIc.
There would still be no software support.
