it's "not a plain file" it's a directory :-)

an ls look's like this :-

drwxr-xr-x  2 fred         2048 Oct 30 10:28 dir
-rw-r--r--  1 fred         8282 Jul 17 13:20 README
^
The first character tells you the type -
	d - directory
	- - plain file

so do a cd directory
then ls
and get file
