and desktop do not have parallel ports and I had no luck with a Sunix

Yeah, that's starting to become a problem nowadays. I always keep one or two older systems around to server as "shop" machines.
Andromeda sells the bare boards for all the various device adapters along with schematics and calibration procedures. I built adapters for bipolar PROMs and 42-pin EPROMS (used in Amigas).
