For a workstation version of Windows, though, 4 GiB is the maximum.
I've long been a proponent of running 32-bit server versions of
Windows, though - they're effectively the same internally as their
workstation counterparts (or better, and with longer support terms,)
and *FULLY* support PAE (a 36-bit bankswitched addressing scheme.)

The only problem is, Windows Server 2008 R2 won't be released in a 32-
bit version. There is a utility to switch what edition a version of
Windows NT identifies as, maybe one could run that on a 32-bit build
of Windows 7, and see it works - the end result would be a 32-bit
Server 2008 R2, although with the Windows 7 userland. (Which is fine,
because a workstation userland is actually desirable.)
