the "stack" of even full-sized extenders would have covered another

The extenders are kept *very* short, occupying only the sloping area
and a little of the 'flat', meaning you could still squeeze a serial
card into slot 1. Although, it would probably have to be one of the
third party cards - the SSC is quite long.

You can actually fit a full-size card in slot 1 and get away with it (though I might be playing with fire here), as I have done with a Workstation card. Check my pics in the Show & Tell thread.
