I thought there was a non-Apple II emulator that supports FDIs?
I do understand that there is a fairly large amount of coding/decoding 
with FDIs so it's not a trivial (or fast) thing for an emulator to do. 
Still...

Yes, but it would be great if we could make images of the "more than 
mildly" protected disks and then be able to run them on an emulator.
