That's exactly right... as usual, I want to do the *opposite* of what any sensible person would do ;-)

That was what I thought as well. Before installing a comms program,
see if your *nix system has tip or cu already installed. They can be
used as a simple terminal - I use them at work to connect from one
system to the serial console of another.
