Right--a simple block font is no more complex than with any other
Apple II. It's just the "GS fonts" that are hairy--and have arbitrary
heights and widths.
It is possible though. Apex System builder, an 8 bit application can
display GS fonts on Hires, DHires and the GS screens. I have little
experience with the GS screens though. One might get a bit more info
looking at the font editor which should be in the Apex archive. Sadly,
Microgram didn't release the source to Apex as well.
It sure is possible--the Beagle Bros. Font Editor is an 8-bit app, and
eats GS fonts for breakfast!
I remember tackling GS font display many years ago, and after finding
documentation on the complex data format and writing about 15 pages of
code, I found that I was almost there. The size and complexity of the
code deterred me from finishing, since the text display subroutine
would have dwarfed almost any application I would write! ;-)
