They introduced something obnoxious into the port polling with one of the XP service packs. It raises hell with things like parallel port attached EPROM programmers also.

Try this registry hack:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Parport\Parameter

"DisableWarmPoll"=dword:00000001

Also try disabling plug-n-play support for the parallel port in the windows device settings.
