I don't think that it's worth to OCR most books as it is simply
a too time consuming process. I've experimented with this a
bit - to get easy access to program listings (copy and paste) -
and found that you have to proofread *very* thoroughly even
with good 600 dpi b/w flatbed scans.

As for a searchable index - well, that would be fine, but most
books contain an index.
