Well, I guess the interactive fiction genre was basically invented by
Infocom.  Their titles (Zork, Starcross, Deadline, et.al.) tend to be
pretty seminal.

True.. but I was more interested in non-Infocom games, as the Infocomgames are fairly widely available for modern systems.
