Yes, but a 12V bulb won't be so bad. A 12V 2A bulb will start

Some day I should buy a variac, though.

you can get them on Ebay for about $50.00 for a 10amp variac

And another $50 for shipping--they weigh lots of pounds!

The solution to this problem (which many eBay sellers seem
not to have discovered) is the USPS "Flat Rate Box".

There are three different sizes, with the largest being about
12"x8"x11.5", and you can mail any weight (up to at least 40
pounds) *anywhere* in the US for just $8.95 ("flat rate").
It's a ridiculously good deal for dense materials--like paper
and iron. ;-)

The USPS pretty well eliminates all the arguments for "shipping
costs" to cover "going to the post office" and "buying boxes".

They provide free boxes (and send them to you free if you order
them online) and free pickup (again, available online), so all
you have to have is some old newspaper and/or cardboard to
crumple for packing (you could even use another free box ;-).

You can print the postage/address label at home and charge
it to a credit card. How could it be easier?
