I use isopropyl alcohol to clean dirt, black marker, etc off computer cases. 
It doesn't harm the plastic, and works surprisingly well (the permanent
marker came all off).  I pour some onto a cloth rag and then rub the
plastic with it.  That way I never spill liquid onto the machine.
