What is the recommended way (as in cleaner, etc) to clean and/or
restore an Apple II style case? Yellowing seems impossible to remove,
but dirt and everything else should come off. Any ideas or
suggestions?

I use isopropyl alcohol to clean dirt, black marker, etc off computer cases. It doesn't harm the plastic, and works surprisingly well (the permanent
marker came all off). I pour some onto a cloth rag and then rub the
plastic with it. That way I never spill liquid onto the machine.

I agree--that works well. In stubborn cases, like adhesive in the
texture, I've also found that a Sonicare toothbrush does wonders.

WRT the cigarette smell, I find that opening up the case and exposing
it to fresh air and sunlight for a day or two makes a big difference--
after that, more time and air circulation eventually works.

You may need to expose all surfaces to the sunlight--meaning taking
the PC board out of the case. When doing this, make sure any EPROMs
are covered with metal foil to prevent any UV from getting into the
windows.
