David, answering your questions: 1) I'll try this out when I get home tonight, but prior to formatting the disk yesterday, I am nearly 100% sure that it displayed <I/O ERROR> and 1600 *before* I formatted the disk. I'll try and confirm this tonight with a different disk. 2) I have a Superdrive 3.5" drive connected to the standard IIgs drive port (ie. *not* using a Superdrive card)
Well I can confirm my previous answer to question 1) - I re-did the test using a fresh disk and the disk was reported as <I/O ERROR> with 1600 blocks before the format, and "BLANK" with 280 blocks after the format. So it is looking quite possible that it is the Superdrive causing problems.
Does anyone else have a Superdrive to verify this conclusion? If it is a problem specific to the Superdrive then it might have to be something I put up with. As I mentioned previously, its not a big issue but if it was effecting everyone then I thought it worth mentioning.
By the way, I can't experiment with my ROM01 tonight, as it is actually my 3 year old daughters, and she is asleep (the IIgs resides in her room). I'll retry the test some time in the near future to see if I have better luck.
cheers, -p
