One other possibility for BASIC, for your son, is MD Basic. It is
designed to only be usable on the GS but can create programs that will
run on any Apple II. It's a free download from this website, along
with the documentation,: http://www.morgandavis.net/portfolio/mdg/
I've downloaded it and the docs but haven't messed with it yet.
