It's one of those things I'd like to see but know I couldn't really help with. So I'll just plug along with my abominable site and hope no-one gets terminal eyestrain.
Thanks for all the nice things people are saying about 'What is the Apple IIGS?'! :-)
I too would LOVE to see a similar site in regards to 8-bit Apple II games. And it could happen, but not for a little while yet...I'm currently in the process of a major, MAJOR revamp to 'What is the Apple IIGS' and it will finally become part of the 21st century and include a database backend and a completely new look, with much better navigation across all the archives. I was hoping that once the new IIGS site is established, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to modify the backend to create a new site dedicated to 8-bit Apple II gaming.
While I'd be happy to employ the new backend for any new site, and design its look and feel, I'm not prepared to moderate it because:
a) 8-bit Apple II games isn't quite my field of expertise (other than the Broderbund classics) and
b) to solely look after the site (which I currently do for 'What is the Apple IIGS?') would be too much of a job for me, that's for sure - it's hard enough to work on the IIGS site with what little spare time I have.
c) it would need to be hosted from a site that supports PHP and MySQL.I'd like to think we could create some sort of customised wiki dedicated to 8-bit Apple II games. But I stress, it's not going to happen for a while yet if its to be based on my new IIGS site, which isn't completed yet nor do I want to set a date when it will be completed.
If you'd like to help out, I suggest you go play Karateka, Captain Goodnight, Airheart, Ultima, Transylvania, take 20 to 30 screen grabs for each game, saving each screen grab as a .gif or .png (NOT as a JPG...it breaks my heart to see screen grabs saved in JPG, completely ruining the quality of image with compression artefacts)...and then hang tight for another 12 months or so until I MIGHT be ready to put a new site together. But that's asking too much, and would create a lot of doubling up for people if they take screen grabs of the same games...
Has anyone got any ideas on creating a database on a comprehensive archive of screen grabs?
